Solar Eclipse 2026

Totality over Iceland

Western Iceland — including Reykjavík — sits under the path of totality on the afternoon of August 12, 2026, with the Sun far higher in the sky than in Spain. The trade-off is the weather: this is the eclipse’s biggest gamble, and its most dramatic backdrop.

When and where

The shadow reaches Iceland from the north-west and crosses the western third of the islandaround 17:48 local time (GMT) — mid-afternoon, not evening. Reykjavík is just inside the path and sees about a minute of totality; the Reykjanes and especially theSnæfellsnes peninsulas on the west coast get closer to two minutes. Crucially, the Sun is around 24° above the horizon here — high enough that you don’t need the perfectly clear western horizon that Spain demands.

The weather gamble

Iceland’s August skies are famously changeable — cloud is common, and it can roll in or clear within the hour. There is no reliable “best spot,” so the winning strategy is mobility and patience: watch the forecast in the days before, be ready to drive along the coast or over a pass to find a gap, and have a plan B. The reward, when it clears, is totality over volcanic coastline, lava fields and ocean — a landscape like nowhere else on the path.

Where to consider

  • Reykjavík — easy access and about a minute of totality; see the local timings.
  • Snæfellsnes peninsula — longer totality on the west coast and spectacular scenery, weather permitting.
  • Reykjanes peninsula — close to Keflavík airport and Reykjavík, with open horizons.

Note that the far north (for example Akureyri) sits just outside the path — a deep 97.9% partial, but not totality.

Iceland or Spain?

Iceland offers a higher, easier-to-see Sun and jaw-dropping scenery, but riskier weather and shorter totality. Spain offers better odds of clear skies and easy mobility, but a very low Sun that demands a clear western horizon. Neither is wrong — it comes down to how much you’ll gamble on cloud and what backdrop you want behind the corona.
